Mattress Flammability

On average, more than 28,000 mattress fires occur annually, killing 571 people, injuring 3,000 and causing $334 million in property damage. For more than 30 years, the fire hazards posed by mattresses intended for residential use have been recognized yet poorly addressed by regulators.

Cooper Tires Recalled

Cooper Zeon 2XS and Mastercraft Avenger ZHP, Size 265/35R18 manufactured between December 21, 2003, and January 10, 2004 The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall of Cooper's tires because they are prone to tread chunking which may lead to tread separation. Tread separation could lead to a loss of control of the vehicle which may result in a vehicle crash without prior warning.

A California class action case involving 414,000 customers who owned or leased Ford Explorers between 1990 and 2000 accuses the automaker of hiding safety concerns while marketing the Explorer. They also contend their vehicles’ resale values deflated following the Firestone tire recall debacle that was linked to 271 traffic deaths.

Consumer Reports magazine crash-tested 12 infant-seat brands and found that 10 didn’t provide adequate protection.  The car-seats have already passed the federal government crash test, which are conducted from the front at 30 miles per hour.

Overchuck & Byron was asked to speak nationally to the Wall Street Journal after a group sought a probe into the effectiveness of the Firestone Recall.  Paul Byron represents Michael Enriquez, who was left a quadriplegic in 2005 when his Firestone tire came apart on his 1993 Ford Explorer.

Former workers at a Lake Mary telecommunications plant say that the tainted water at their plant led to their illnesses, all but a few with cancer.  Environmental engineers found four groundwater hotspots containing high levels of TCE (trichloroethene), which the workers say was used at the plant as a grease cutter to clean parts and to wash their hands.

FORD WINDSTAR SLIDING DOORS INVESTIGATED

NHTSA's ODI is also looking into 56 consumer complaints alleging the power sliding door may not latch fully on 1999 to 2002 Ford Windstars, and may open while vehicle is in motion. Some of the owners stated that either the "door ajar" warning light would illuminate and/or the door opens completely when the vehicle is ascending a hill, making a turn or traveling over rough roads.

MOTORCYCLE RECALL

Recently, as a direct result of information obtained in a law suit against Harley-Davidson and Buell Motorcycle Company, thousands of motorcycles were recalled by the federal government because of a defect in the throttle system that could cause the throttle to stick. After learning about this defect, which could cause injury or death to riders, the firm petitioned the Court for permission to release “secret” documents to the National Highway Traffic & Safety Administration (NHTSA).
